Community involvement

Over the past year we have promoted the project to thousands of members of the trans* community at group meetings in north Wales and Manchester and at the Sparkle celebration. We have shared some of April’s personal photographs, talked about her life and listened to reminiscences and captured oral histories. A lot of people remember April’s story and the impact it had on their lives.

At a Transforum meeting in February we asked Dr Jo Stanley to run a workshop about mapping lives. All the participants tried to create diagrams or maps with major life events represented as stations on a train map or branches on a tree. This is an excellent way to visualise life histories and participants really enjoyed the process.

Talking and thinking about April’s story has certainly proved a brilliant jumping off point for people to analyse their own stories. Thanks to all the participants and to Sianne Thomas for the photographs.
